Bloomberg Completes Its Acquisition of Canoe Intelligence

Bloomberg closes the deal it announced in July

Canoe said it processes more than 1.5 million documents a month across more than 44,000 funds. Bloomberg completed its acquisition of the AI-powered data platform on October 1, bringing Canoe’s document collection and data-validation tools into its financial information business.

The completion follows the companies’ July 29 announcement of an agreement to acquire Canoe. At that time, Canoe said it served more than 500 institutional clients representing over $11 trillion in assets under service. Bloomberg did not disclose a purchase price in its completion announcement.

In its July announcement, Bloomberg said its private-markets offering included data on more than three million private companies, 50,000 private funds and 16,000 private direct loans. The company described the Canoe acquisition as a way to connect that wider set of data and tools with information Canoe collects from private-fund documents.

Canoe turns private-fund documents into portfolio data

Private-market investments generate information in documents that can be difficult to combine with the structured data used to track public holdings. Canoe collects and validates that material, then delivers it in a format designed for downstream systems. Bloomberg describes the platform as a translation layer between unstructured private-markets information and investors’ portfolio tools.

That work connects to an existing integration with Bloomberg PORT Enterprise, the company’s portfolio-management product. Joint clients can already send permissioned, validated private-fund data from Canoe into PORT Enterprise, Bloomberg said, supporting a view of public and private assets together and streamlining post-investment workflows.

Existing clients keep their service as Bloomberg invests

Bloomberg said Canoe clients will continue to receive the dedicated service they use today, with increased investment in Canoe’s technology platform. The announcement points to improved data coverage and timeliness, along with more automated workflows for exposure and risk analysis, cash management and looking through to underlying holdings. Bloomberg said the expanded workflows will be supported by an integrated Investment Book of Record across public and private assets.

Those are stated areas for development, not a list of newly released features. Bloomberg also plans to extend fund discovery, screening, benchmarking and comparison tools into private markets, giving investors ways to evaluate funds before committing capital as well as monitor investments afterward. The plans also include more timely performance data and consistent fund identifiers, including the Financial Instrument Global Identifier, or FIGI.

ASKB is part of Bloomberg’s planned integration

Bloomberg says it intends to bring the combined capabilities into ASKB, its agentic AI conversational interface, in a permissioned environment. The stated aim is to help investors search for opportunities, analyze information and generate insights across public and private markets. The announcement does not give a timeline for those planned capabilities.

Jason Eiswerth, CEO of Canoe Intelligence, now part of Bloomberg, described the data problem the companies aim to address:

“Canoe was built to solve one of private markets’ most persistent challenges: turning fragmented, complex data into information investors can actually use.”

The immediate change for joint clients is the existing Canoe-to-PORT data connection. The broader plans described by Bloomberg include expanding data coverage, pre-investment analysis and portfolio workflows, as well as bringing those capabilities into ASKB.
