Apple says its first Apple Intelligence features for China will begin developer beta testing on November 4 and reach eligible iPhones with iOS 27.3 in December. The company’s October 31 announcement sets out the initial feature package and the devices and language settings required to use it.
Testing starts November 4
The features will be available to developers in the latest iOS beta from November 4, Apple said. The public release is planned for December as part of iOS 27.3. Support on platforms beyond iPhone is contingent on receiving necessary approvals.
The initial package includes tools for writing, photo editing, translation, notifications and summaries. Writing Tools can rewrite, proofread and summarize text; Clean Up removes distracting objects from Photos; and Genmoji creates custom emoji from text descriptions. Photos also gains natural-language search and the ability to make a Memories movie from a description.
Alibaba’s Qwen enters selected features
Apple has partnered with Alibaba to add Qwen to some Apple Intelligence experiences. Users in China will be able to access Qwen through Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence for certain requests, including questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations. Apple says users can sign in to a Qwen account or use Sign in with Apple.
The announced features also include Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone; email summaries and suggested replies; notification summaries and priority alerts; and summaries of audio and call transcripts. Siri will support typing requests and maintaining context in a continuing conversation. The feature list pairs Apple’s own generative models with Qwen access in selected functions, rather than describing a single model as the engine for every task.
Only specified iPhones qualify
Apple lists the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later models, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo as supported devices. Apple’s compatibility notes say Siri and the device must both be set to English and Simplified Chinese, and Apple’s support guidance says their language settings must match. Some individual features may have additional language or regional limits.
Live Translation through AirPods has its own hardware requirements: Apple lists AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 and later, and AirPods Max 2. The earbuds or headphones must have the latest firmware and be paired with an iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled; the language settings must also meet Apple’s requirements.
Siri AI stays out of the first release
Apple explicitly says the update does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features it announced at WWDC 2026. That distinction matters: the China release adds typing to Siri and selected Qwen-backed requests, but Apple is not presenting it as the arrival of its newer AI assistant.
The launch is a defined first wave, with device eligibility, language settings and regulatory approval shaping where the features run.
