Amazon and Stanford launch joint AI and science initiative
The Stanford and Amazon Research Initiative will support joint research, PhD fellowships, symposia and workshops across AI, energy and healthcare.

Amazon has launched the Stanford and Amazon Research Initiative with Stanford University, creating a new framework for advancing research in artificial intelligence, energy and healthcare. The initiative aims to move research results into practical use while building on an established relationship between the two institutions.
More than 10 teams across Amazon currently fund active research and PhD fellowships at Stanford. The work spans humanoid robotics, post-quantum cryptography, causal measurement science and AI-driven radiology. By formalizing that collaboration, Amazon and Stanford say they want to take on difficult research problems, broaden participation among scholars and shorten the path from scientific breakthroughs to solutions that improve people's lives.

A framework for university-industry research
The initiative focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, automated reasoning and health, combining Stanford’s interdisciplinary research structure with Amazon’s experience in cloud computing and AI services. Projects will address both foundational and applied questions, with Stanford faculty and Amazon scientists working together across fields.
The collaboration will support joint research projects between Stanford faculty and Amazon scientists, along with PhD fellowships focused on technical challenges in AI and related fields. It will also include symposia and workshops intended to bring interdisciplinary scholars together to advance research.
Stanford and Amazon hosted an event on the university’s campus on September 16 to mark the agreement and discuss ongoing Amazon-supported research. The event also identified possible new areas for collaboration.
A fireside discussion featured Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, and David Studdert, Stanford’s vice provost and dean of research and a professor of health policy and law. Curtis Langlotz, Stanford’s professor of radiology, medicine and biomedical data science and senior associate vice president for research, moderated the discussion.
The conversation examined university-industry collaborations and their role in scientific advances in fields ranging from health to security. It also addressed artificial intelligence and its effect on research.

Amazon said its academic collaborations are intended to advance foundational and applied research, support the education and training of future scientists and translate academic discoveries into practical solutions. The Stanford initiative adds a shared structure to research activity that the companies describe as longstanding, while setting out new opportunities for collaboration between the university and Amazon’s research teams.
