Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, witnessed ADNOC’s agreement with OpenAI and G42 at ADIPEC on November 2. The multi-year deal puts OpenAI Frontier to work connecting AI agents across the state-owned energy company’s operations, from well planning to sales and trading. ADNOC says it is the first energy company to deploy OpenAI’s frontier technology.
ADNOC starts with field plans and barrel valuations
The first application will combine subsurface, facilities and economic analysis into integrated field-development plans. ADNOC says the system will draw on decades of information covering thousands of wells, multiple reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities, adding capital, cost and commercial considerations to its planning. The company’s announcement says the plans could be prepared in hours rather than months, and optimized for a whole field rather than one reservoir or facility at a time.
A second application will connect decisions across production and processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading. ADNOC says interconnected agents will forecast crude supply, demand, prices and margins, then assess the commercial and operational effects of decisions across that chain. The stated goal is to estimate the value of a barrel while it remains underground, rather than treating each stage as a separate calculation.
OpenAI models will run on G42 infrastructure in the UAE
The partners plan to develop a tailored decision-intelligence system using OpenAI’s GPT models, ADNOC’s industrial data and expertise, and G42’s sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE. ADNOC says human experts will retain oversight of consequential decisions, and that its proprietary data and critical infrastructure will remain protected under the company’s oversight.
ADNOC also says the partnership will establish a shared base of industrial knowledge intended to preserve institutional expertise and support future applications. The agreement includes cybersecurity work through OpenAI’s Daybreak Blue initiative, which the company says will help security teams identify vulnerabilities and protect energy infrastructure. The announcement does not specify a deployment schedule for the two initial applications.
The agreement builds on ADNOC’s existing AI rollout
ADNOC presents the deal as an extension of an existing program, not a standalone trial. The company says it has more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases deployed or in development, while its ENERGYai system provides specialized subsurface analysis. The new partnership is intended to connect that operational intelligence with commercial and capital decisions across the company.
ADNOC says it has rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise to more than 40,000 employees, with adoption above 97%, and will work with OpenAI to develop additional systems and train staff to use them. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said: More capable AI can help us tackle some of the world’s hardest problems – particularly around energy. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in ADNOC’s announcement
