OpenAI's Data Understanding team builds the datasets and quantized representations used in large model training runs, covering synthesis, filtering, deduplication, quality control and tokenization. This research engineer/scientist role works on synthesizing multimodal content — images, audio and video — plus their supervisions, improving noisy pipelines, building quality filters, using models to automate data prep, and measuring whether dataset changes improve model performance.
