OpenAI's robotics team is hiring a firmware engineer to lead embedded architecture for new robot hardware: boot, RTOS behavior, peripherals, power, communications, fault handling and field diagnostics. Responsibilities include rapid hardware bring-up, safety-critical design, validation and release processes, and hands-on production firmware. The posting asks for extensive firmware experience, fluency in low-level languages, and comfort working close to hardware under real-time constraints. The embedded stack is largely Rust, async Rust frameworks such as Embassy are a bonus, and the role is in office four days a week with relocation assistance.
