OpenAI's Robotics team is hiring an Actuator Gear Design Engineer in San Francisco to own custom gearing and gear stages for robotic actuators, from architecture and requirements trade-offs through prototype validation and integration into full gearbox assemblies. The work spans precision tolerances and load paths, thermal and structural design, encoder and sensing strategies, test methodology, failure analysis, and handoff to suppliers and internal manufacturing. The posting asks for a mechanical, robotics or mechatronics degree, 5+ years designing gear systems or precision mechatronic hardware, and CAD/PLM experience such as NX and Teamcenter. In-person presence four days a week.
