Waymo's AI Foundations team seeks a 2027 summer PhD intern to research reward generation for autonomous driving planning. The intern will design and test a system where LLM meta-agents create and refine reward functions, analyze policy failures and trade-offs, and help move validated reward formulations into planner recipes. Applicants should be pursuing a PhD and have hands-on reinforcement learning, deep-learning policy training with PyTorch or JAX, Python, and familiarity with AV planning or sequential decision-making. Publication and meta-RL experience preferred. Hybrid in Mountain View.
