Planet was founded in 2010 by three NASA scientists. The company was originally founded under the name Cosmogia Inc. and later became Planet Labs. Planet builds and operates Earth-observation satellites and provides near-daily satellite data, imagery, derived data products, analytics and cloud-based software through its platform. Its customers and partners include businesses, governments and research institutions. Planet became a public benefit corporation and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PL in December 2021. Planet also applies artificial intelligence and machine learning across its satellite, data-processing and customer-platform workflows, with products including Planet SuperRes and Planet Analytic Feeds.
