Zoubin Ghahramani: Google DeepMind and Cambridge

Zoubin Ghahramani is vice-president of research at Google DeepMind and Professor of Information Engineering at Cambridge, a Royal Society Fellow since 2015.

Zoubin Ghahramani is a machine learning researcher who works on probabilistic modelling and Bayesian methods. He is Professor of Information Engineering in the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering and an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, and vice-president of research at Google DeepMind. He was born in Moscow on 8 February 1970 to a family from Shiraz, Iran, grew up in Spain, took a BSE in computer science and a BA in cognitive science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1990, and completed a PhD in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences in 1995 under Michael I. Jordan and Tomaso Poggio, then moved to the University of Toronto as an ITRC postdoctoral fellow in the Artificial Intelligence Lab, working with Geoffrey Hinton. He was one of the founding members of UCL's Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, where he was on the faculty from 1998 to 2005, and was concurrently an Associate Research Professor in Carnegie Mellon's Machine Learning Department from 2002 to 2012. He co-founded Geometric Intelligence, founded in 2014 with Gary Marcus, Kenneth Stanley and Douglas Bemis and acquired by Uber in December 2016, when its team became Uber AI Labs; he was Uber's chief scientist and VP of AI before joining Google in 2020. He was the founding Cambridge director of the Alan Turing Institute, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2015 and won the Royal Society's Milner Award in 2021.
