Yann LeCun: AMI Labs chairman and NYU professor

Yann LeCun, executive chairman of AMI Labs and Jacob T. Schwartz Professor at NYU, shared the 2018 Turing Award and led Meta AI research until 2025.

Yann LeCun is a French-American computer scientist. He is executive chairman of Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI Labs), the Paris-based world-model research company he co-founded after leaving Meta, and Jacob T. Schwartz Professor of Computer Science, Data Science, Neural Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYU's Courant Institute, where he has been on the faculty since 2003. He joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1988, was named Facebook's director of AI research in late 2013, and announced in November 2025 that he would leave Meta at the end of that year, after twelve years - five as founding director of FAIR and seven as chief AI scientist. His 1989 paper on backpropagation for handwritten zip-code recognition and the 1998 LeNet paper on gradient-based learning made convolutional networks the basis of modern computer vision. He shared the 2018 ACM A.M. Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, and argues that language models alone will not get to human-level AI. He is also a partner at 224 Ventures.
