Trevor Darrell - UC Berkeley professor, BAIR co-director

Trevor Darrell is a UC Berkeley EECS professor and founding co-director of BAIR and Berkeley DeepDrive. His group produced the Caffe deep-learning framework.

Trevor Darrell is a professor on the faculty of the CS and EE divisions of the EECS department at UC Berkeley, and the founding co-director of Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR), the Berkeley DeepDrive (BDD) industrial consortium and the BAIR Commons programme. He earned a BSE from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988 and SM and PhD degrees from MIT in 1991 and 1996. He was on the MIT EECS faculty from 1999 to 2008, where he directed the Vision Interface Group, led the vision group at the UC-affiliated International Computer Science Institute from 2008 to 2014, and was faculty director of Berkeley's PATH research centre from 2015 to 2021. His group works on large-scale perceptual learning for autonomous vehicles, media search and multimodal interaction, and produced the Caffe deep-learning framework, described in a 2014 technical report with Yangqing Jia as first author. Darrell also co-founded and is president of Prompt AI, and advises SafelyYou, Nexar and SuperAnnotate. His older papers keep collecting retrospective honours: the ICML Test-of-Time Award in 2024 for DeCAF, and a CVPR 2025 Longuet-Higgins Prize for 'Fully Convolutional Networks for Semantic Segmentation'.
