Tom B. Brown is a co-founder of Anthropic and, in the company's own words, its Chief Compute Officer, leading the technical organisation responsible for securing, scaling and effectively using its compute resources — the work behind training and serving Anthropic's frontier models. He received an MEng from MIT, where he majored in computer science with a focus on its application to brain and cognitive sciences. Before Anthropic he led the engineering of GPT-3 at OpenAI and was the lead author of 'Language Models are Few-Shot Learners', posted in May 2020, which showed that a 175-billion-parameter model could perform many tasks from a handful of examples. Anthropic also credits him, with Dario Amodei, with co-inventing reinforcement learning from human feedback, the technique that turned base language models into conversational assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT. His GitHub profile lists earlier work at OpenAI and Google Brain. Anthropic was founded in 2021 and announced a $124 million Series A that May; its leadership page lists Brown among seven co-founders. On 2 September 2026 he took the company's seat in public policy, in a fireside chat with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at the G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
