Timnit Gebru founded the Distributed AI Research Institute and is its executive director. She co-founded Black in AI and left Google in a dispute in 2020.

Timnit Gebru is a computer scientist who founded the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR), launched on 2 December 2021, and is its executive director. Born in Ethiopia, she sought US asylum at sixteen. She co-led Google's Ethical AI team until December 2020, when her employment ended over a paper on the risks of large language models: Gebru said she was fired; Google's reply and an internal email from AI head Jeff Dean said it was accepting a resignation she had offered. She co-founded Black in AI, sits on AddisCoder's board, and her first book, Deep Unlearning, is due in February 2027.
