Sepp Hochreiter: LSTM co-author, JKU Linz and NXAI

Sepp Hochreiter heads the Institute for Machine Learning at JKU Linz and is chief scientist at NXAI. He co-wrote the 1997 LSTM paper.

Sepp Hochreiter heads the Institute for Machine Learning at Johannes Kepler University Linz, and the university's Linz Institute of Technology names him as the manager of its AI Lab. He studied computer science and mathematics at the Technical University of Munich, where in 1991 he wrote the diploma thesis "Untersuchungen zu dynamischen neuronalen Netzen" at Wilhelm Brauer's chair and took his PhD between 1994 and 1999; he was then a postdoc in Colorado and an assistant professor in Berlin. He is known for Long Short-Term Memory, the recurrent architecture he published with Juergen Schmidhuber in Neural Computation in November 1997. His university dates the idea to 1991: in JKU's words, that year he "paved the way to today's form of artificial intelligence by coming up with the LSTM (Long Short Term Memory) technology". LSTM let recurrent networks carry information across long sequences and stayed the standard for sequence modelling until transformers displaced it. NXAI, the Linz company he co-founded in December 2023, lists him as Chief Scientist next to chief executive Albert Ortig; it builds on xLSTM, his group's reworking of LSTM, and sells it as a European alternative to transformer models. The Wilhelm Exner Medal Foundation gave him its medal in 2025, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which took him in as a corresponding member in 2024, announced him a full member of its mathematics and natural sciences class in March 2026.
