Sam Altman has been chief executive of OpenAI since 2019. He led the 2025 restructuring into OpenAI Group PBC and the $122bn round closed in March 2026.

Sam Altman is the chief executive and a co-founder of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and has run it since 2019. Under him the lab was restructured in October 2025 into OpenAI Group PBC, controlled by a nonprofit renamed the OpenAI Foundation, and in March 2026 it closed a $122 billion round at an $852 billion valuation. He was president of Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019, and invests in energy: he chaired Oklo until April 2025 and sat on Helion's board until March 2026.
