Rumman Chowdhury - AI ethics and model evaluation

Rumman Chowdhury founded and runs Humane Intelligence PBC, led Twitter's META team, organised the DEF CON 2023 AI red team and was a 2024 US Science Envoy.

Rumman Chowdhury is a data scientist and AI ethics leader. She is founder and CEO of Humane Intelligence PBC, a public benefit corporation selling what it calls a modular test-and-evaluation stack for generative models and agents. She holds two undergraduate degrees from MIT, a master's in quantitative methods from Columbia and a PhD in political science from the University of California, San Diego. She was global lead for responsible AI at Accenture and then directed Twitter's Machine Learning Ethics, Transparency and Accountability (META) team from 2021 until November 2022, when she was among the staff laid off after Elon Musk's takeover. In 2023 she helped organise the generative AI red-teaming challenge at DEF CON's AI Village, run with models from Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face, NVIDIA, OpenAI and Stability, with participation from Microsoft and on an evaluation platform built by Scale AI, supported by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate and the Congressional AI Caucus, and billed by the organisers as the largest red-teaming exercise ever held for a group of AI models. The US State Department named her one of four US Science Envoys on 13 March 2024, the cohort's envoy for artificial intelligence, with a focus on emerging markets. She also co-founded the Humane Intelligence nonprofit, stepped down as its CEO in 2025 to concentrate on the public benefit corporation, and stayed on as its distinguished advisor. She is an affiliate of Harvard's Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society.
