Quoc Le: Discovery Loop co-founder, seq2seq creator

Quoc Le co-founded Discovery Loop in 2026 after 15 years at Google Brain, where he co-created seq2seq learning and started the AutoML project.

Quoc V. Le (Lê Viết Quốc, born 1982) is a computer scientist born in Hương Thủy, Vietnam. He studied at the Australian National University, working with Alex Smola, then took a PhD at Stanford under Andrew Ng. In 2011 he became a founding member of Google Brain alongside Ng, Jeff Dean and Greg Corrado, and led its early large-scale unsupervised learning work, including the model that learned to recognise cats from YouTube frames. With Ilya Sutskever and Oriol Vinyals he introduced sequence-to-sequence learning in 2014, the encoder-decoder framework behind neural machine translation. In 2017 he started Google Brain's AutoML project, using neural architecture search to design networks automatically; that line of work produced EfficientNet. He also worked on Meena, later renamed LaMDA, on chain-of-thought prompting and on AlphaGeometry. In 2024 he, Sutskever and Vinyals received the NeurIPS Test of Time Award for the seq2seq paper. He left Google in August 2026 and co-founded Discovery Loop with Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat and Oriol Vinyals — a public benefit corporation building systems that automate experimental loops in machine learning, science and engineering.
