Prafulla Dhariwal is a Technical Fellow at OpenAI who led the Omni team behind GPT-4o and co-authored the paper showing diffusion models beat GANs.

Prafulla Dhariwal is a Technical Fellow at OpenAI, working on generative models and unsupervised learning. He is from Pune and lives in San Francisco. He won gold at the International Astronomy Olympiad in Hangzhou in November 2009, named best junior competitor, then at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2012 and the International Physics Olympiad in 2013, before studying computer science, mathematics and physics as an undergraduate at MIT. Dhariwal joined OpenAI in 2016 and co-created GPT-3, DALL·E 2, Jukebox, Glow and PPO. He co-authored 'Diffusion Models Beat GANs on Image Synthesis' (2021), which showed diffusion models outscoring generative adversarial networks on image-generation benchmarks, and later worked with Yang Song on consistency models. He went on to head OpenAI's multimodal ('Omni') team and to lead the making of GPT-4o. Two days after its release Sam Altman wrote that 'GPT-4o would not have happened without the vision, talent, conviction, and determination of @prafdhar over a long period of time.' He was later named a Technical Fellow, the title his X profile carries today.
