Miles Brundage - AI policy researcher, AVERI

Miles Brundage is executive director of AVERI, the AI auditing institute he co-founded, and a former head of policy research at OpenAI, which he left in 2024.

Miles Brundage is an AI policy researcher. He took a BA in political science at George Washington University and a PhD in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology at Arizona State University in 2019, having worked at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy before graduate school. He was a research fellow at the University of Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute from 2016 to 2018, then joined OpenAI, where he worked from 2018 through 2024 as a research scientist on the policy team, then head of policy research, and finally senior advisor for AGI readiness. He left in October 2024, saying he wanted more independence in his research. He is executive director of AVERI, the AI Verification and Evaluation Research Institute, a US non-profit he co-founded that launched in January 2026 to make third-party auditing of frontier AI effective and universal. He sets its strategy, leads the team and builds its partnerships. Alongside AVERI he is a non-resident senior fellow at the Institute for Progress, a member of the Institute for Advanced Study's AI Policy and Governance Working Group, a member of the AI Governance Forum at the Center for a New American Security and a member of the EU AI Act Scientific Panel. He sat on Axon's AI and Policing Technology Ethics Board from 2018 to 2022. He advises Epoch AI and the RAND Corporation, and writes regularly on Substack.
