Margaret Mitchell - Chief Ethics Scientist, Hugging Face

Margaret Mitchell, known as Meg, is a computer scientist working on AI ethics and natural language processing. She holds a BA in linguistics from Reed College, an MSc in computational linguistics from the University of Washington (2009) and a PhD from the University of Aberdeen (2013). After a postdoc at Johns Hopkins she joined Microsoft Research in 2013 and became research lead on Seeing AI, an accessibility tool that narrates text and images for blind and low-vision users. She moved to Google Research in November 2016, where she founded and co-led the Ethical AI team with Timnit Gebru. She is the first author of "Model Cards for Model Reporting" (2018), the documentation format now standard for released models, and a co-author of "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots" (2021) with Gebru, Emily M. Bender and Angelina McMillan-Major, on which she appears under the pseudonym Shmargaret Shmitchell. Google fired her on 19 February 2021. Mitchell joined Hugging Face in late 2021 and is its Researcher and Chief Ethics Scientist, leading work on machine learning data processing and responsible AI development. She co-founded Widening NLP. In August 2026 she gave a keynote at the Deep Learning Indaba in Lagos, asking who defines AI and whose interests it serves.
