Luke Zettlemoyer: UW professor, Meta FAIR director

Luke Zettlemoyer is a professor at the University of Washington and a senior research director at Meta FAIR Seattle. He is ACL vice-president for 2026.

Luke Zettlemoyer is a Professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington and a Senior Research Director at Meta, which lists him as a research manager and site lead for FAIR's Seattle lab. He was an undergraduate at NC State, received his PhD from MIT, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on empirical methods for natural language semantics: designing machine learning algorithms, introducing new tasks and datasets, analysing model performance and, most recently, studying how best to develop self-supervision signals for pretraining. He left the Allen Institute for AI, where he was a senior research manager and led the AllenNLP project, for Facebook AI Research in March 2018, keeping the UW professorship part-time. He was named an ACL Fellow in 2021, won a PECASE in 2016 and an Allen Distinguished Investigator award in 2014. The December 2024 ACL election placed him on the presidential track: vice-president in 2026, president in 2027. Schmidt Sciences named him an AI2050 Senior Fellow in November 2025.
