Luis Serrano is an AI educator, mathematician and author who runs Serrano.Academy, a YouTube channel and course site that explains machine learning through illustrations and analogies rather than formula-heavy derivations. He holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan, took his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Waterloo, and did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Quebec at Montreal. He won a bronze medal for Colombia at the 1999 International Mathematical Olympiad. Before teaching full time he was a machine learning engineer at Google, lead AI educator at Apple and head of AI and data science content at Udacity, worked at Cohere, and was a research scientist in quantum AI at Zapata Computing. He wrote Grokking Machine Learning, published by Manning in November 2021; a second edition has been in early access since December 2025, with publication estimated for November 2026. The channel has run since September 2013 and has about 196,000 subscribers; recent videos cover attention and low-rank adaptation, and the site carries his courses on large language models, reinforcement learning and deep learning.
