Jonathan Frankle is Chief AI Scientist at Databricks, which he joined via the MosaicML acquisition, and the author of the lottery ticket hypothesis.

Jonathan Frankle is Chief AI Scientist at Databricks, where he leads research on reinforcement learning, model training and agent evaluation. He arrived through Databricks' $1.3 billion acquisition of MosaicML in June 2023, the 2021 CSAIL spin-out he co-founded with his adviser Michael Carbin. He is known for the lottery ticket hypothesis: a dense network contains a sparse subnetwork, a "winning ticket", that trains on its own to comparable accuracy at 10 to 20 per cent of the size. The paper won a best paper award at ICLR 2019 and his MIT dissertation on it the 2023 AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award. He holds a BSE and an MSE from Princeton and a 2023 PhD from MIT. At Georgetown Law he was the first Staff Technologist at the Center on Privacy and Technology, contributing to the report The Perpetual Lineup, and an Adjunct Professor of Law teaching Programming for Lawyers in 2016 and 2019. He works with the OECD on implementing its AI Principles and lives in New York City.
