Joanna Bryson: AI ethics at the Hertie School

Joanna Bryson is Professor of Ethics and Technology at the Hertie School in Berlin, co-author of the UK Principles of Robotics and an AI governance adviser.

Joanna Bryson is Professor of Ethics and Technology at the Hertie School in Berlin, since February 2020, and a founding member of its Centre for Digital Governance. Her degrees in social and computer sciences are from Chicago, Edinburgh and MIT; she taught computer science at Bath from 2002 to 2019. She is one of fourteen authors of the EPSRC/AHRC Principles of Robotics, drafted in 2010 and published in Connection Science in 2017. Her policy work has taken her to the UN, UNESCO, the EU, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the OECD; Germany nominated her to the Global Partnership on AI in 2020, where she chaired a committee on AI governance. UCLouvain awarded her an honorary doctorate in February 2025.
