Jitendra Malik is the Arthur J. Chick Professor at UC Berkeley and, since January 2026, VP and Distinguished Scientist at Amazon's Frontier AI & Robotics lab.

Jitendra Malik is the Arthur J. Chick Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley, where he has been on the faculty since January 1986. He was born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, in 1960, took a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at IIT Kanpur in 1980 and a PhD in computer science at Stanford in December 1985. His own page lists 62 doctoral students, past and present, and 33 former and current postdoctoral fellows. His work in computer vision includes anisotropic diffusion, normalized cuts, shape context and R-CNN. His CV records him as research scientist director and site lead of Facebook AI Research in Menlo Park in 2018 and 2019, research scientist director at Meta's FAIR from 2020 to 2024 part-time, and VP of robotics research at FAIR in 2025. Since January 2026 he has been VP and Distinguished Scientist at Amazon's Frontier AI & Robotics lab in San Francisco, while continuing at Berkeley. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in May 2026. His other honours include the ACM-AAAI Allen Newell Award in 2016, the IJCAI Award for Research Excellence in 2018 and the IEEE Computer Society Computer Pioneer Award in 2019; he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and of the National Academy of Sciences.
