Jack Clark co-founded Anthropic, led its policy work until 2026, now runs the Anthropic Institute as Head of Public Benefit, and writes Import AI.

Jack Clark is a co-founder of Anthropic who led its policy work from the company's founding in 2021 until March 2026, when he became Anthropic's Head of Public Benefit and took charge of the newly created Anthropic Institute. The institute brings together the company's Frontier Red Team, Societal Impacts and Economic Research groups into one effort to study and publish on the effects of increasingly capable AI. Before Anthropic he was policy director at OpenAI, which he joined in September 2016, and before that a technology journalist at The Register and Bloomberg, writing about distributed systems, data centres and early machine-learning research. He has written the weekly newsletter Import AI since its first issue on 1 August 2016; its Substack page reports more than 141,000 subscribers. He was a founding member of the Stanford AI Index (2017-2024) and served on the U.S. National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (2021-2024). He took a BA in English Literature with Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia in 2009. TIME named him to its 100 most influential people in AI in August 2026. His own About page has not caught up: it still calls him Anthropic's head of policy and puts Import AI's readership at 70,000.
