Ian Goodfellow is an American computer scientist best known for inventing generative adversarial networks (GANs) in 2014, a method that sets two neural networks against each other to produce realistic synthetic images and that became a foundation of generative AI. He took a BS and MS in computer science at Stanford University under Andrew Ng, and a PhD at the Universite de Montreal in 2014 under Yoshua Bengio and Aaron Courville. After his doctorate he joined Google Brain. He moved to the newly founded OpenAI in March 2016, returned to Google Research eleven months later, and left again in 2019 to become director of machine learning in Apple's Special Projects Group. He resigned from Apple in May 2022 over its plan to require in-person work, then joined Google DeepMind as a research scientist. With Bengio and Courville he wrote the textbook Deep Learning (MIT Press, 2016), and he wrote the deep-learning chapter of Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach. His X profile describes him as co-founder of a startup still in stealth and as founding chairman of the Public Health Action Network, a nonprofit working on airborne disease transmission; his LinkedIn headline reads "AI Startup Founder". The startup has not been named publicly.
