Gary Marcus is a cognitive scientist and a persistent critic of large language models. He is professor emeritus of psychology and neural science at New York University, lives in Canada, and writes Marcus on AI, a Substack whose page showed 118K+ subscribers and #23 in Technology in September 2026. He founded Geometric Intelligence, bought by Uber in December 2016 to seed Uber AI Labs. He has written six books by his own count, including Rebooting AI (2019, with Ernest Davis) and Taming Silicon Valley (MIT Press, 2024). In May 2023 he testified on AI oversight before a US Senate subcommittee alongside Sam Altman.
