Eliezer Yudkowsky - MIRI co-founder, AI risk writer

Eliezer Yudkowsky is an American writer and researcher on AI alignment. He co-founded the Machine Intelligence Research Institute in 2000, then called the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and MIRI's site lists him today as co-founder and a member of the board; the institute is run by chief executive Malo Bourgon and president Nate Soares. Largely self-taught, he never attended high school or college, and became known through his writing on rationality and AI risk, first at Overcoming Bias and then at LessWrong, the community blog created from his posts in February 2009 and collected as "Rationality: From AI to Zombies". For more than two decades he has argued that a sufficiently capable, misaligned AI would be an extinction risk, and has pressed for international agreement to stop work on smarter-than-human systems. MIRI's own page notes he appeared on TIME's 2023 list of the 100 most influential people in AI and has contributed chapters to The Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence and Global Catastrophic Risks. In September 2025 he and Nate Soares published "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All" with Little, Brown; the publisher calls it an instant New York Times bestseller, and MIRI marked its first year in September 2026.
