Demis Hassabis - Google DeepMind chair, Nobel laureate

Demis Hassabis co-founded DeepMind and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Since August 2026 he chairs Google DeepMind and is Alphabet's chief scientist.

Demis Hassabis co-founded DeepMind and ran it as chief executive until August 2026, when Sundar Pichai made him chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet and handed day-to-day control of the lab to Koray Kavukcuoglu. He remains founder and chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, the drug-design company. A chess player who co-designed the 1994 game Theme Park at 17, he graduated from Cambridge in 1997 with a double first in computer science and took a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at UCL in 2009. He led the work behind AlphaGo, AlphaZero and AlphaFold, and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with John Jumper.
