David Krueger: AI safety researcher, Evitable

David Krueger is an assistant professor at Mila and the Universite de Montreal and CEO of Evitable, the nonprofit on AI risk he founded in 2025.

David Krueger is an assistant professor in Robust, Reasoning and Responsible AI at the Universite de Montreal and a core academic member of Mila, the Quebec AI institute, where he holds a Canada CIFAR AI Chair and the IVADO Professorship in Responsible AI. He trained in deep learning in Montreal under Yoshua Bengio, Roland Memisevic and Aaron Courville between 2013 and 2021, interned on Google DeepMind's AI safety team in 2018, and was on the faculty at the University of Cambridge from 2021 to 2024. He is a research affiliate of UC Berkeley's Center for Human-Compatible AI (CHAI) and of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at the University of Cambridge. His work is on reducing societal-scale risks from AI: goal misgeneralization and other alignment failure modes, algorithmic manipulation, memorisation, interpretability and robustness. He has co-authored papers with Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Jan Leike. In 2023 he was a research director on the founding team of the UK AI Security Institute, and he says he initiated the Center for AI Safety's Statement on AI Risk. In 2025 he founded Evitable, a nonprofit whose stated mission is to inform and organise the public around societal-scale risks of AI and to end the race to build superintelligence. His own site lists him as its CEO and records that he is on leave from his faculty job for 2026 and not taking new students.
