Christopher Manning: Stanford NLP professor

Christopher Manning is Stanford's Thomas M. Siebel Professor in Machine Learning, led the Stanford AI Lab 2018-2025 and is an AI Partner at AIX Ventures.

Christopher D. Manning (born 1965) is an Australian computer scientist and linguist who holds the inaugural Thomas M. Siebel Professorship in Machine Learning in Stanford's Departments of Linguistics and Computer Science. His own page records a B.A. (Hons) from the Australian National University in 1989 and a Stanford PhD in linguistics in 1994. His work on neural approaches to language produced the GloVe word vectors, attention and neural machine translation, and tree-recursive networks. He founded the Stanford NLP group, released the open-source CoreNLP and Stanza toolkits, is a principal developer of Universal Dependencies, and co-wrote the textbooks 'Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing' (1999) and 'Introduction to Information Retrieval' (2008). Manning directed the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 2018 until Carlos Guestrin succeeded him in 2025, and is a co-founder, Associate Director and Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI. He received the IEEE John von Neumann Medal in 2024 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2025.
