Chip Huyen is a Vietnamese-American writer and computer scientist who works on bringing AI into production and writes about AI system design. She grew up in a rice-farming village in Vietnam and is based in San Francisco. She has worked on ML tooling at NVIDIA, as a core developer of NeMo, and at Snorkel AI and Netflix, and she founded and sold an AI infrastructure company. She graduated from Stanford and taught machine learning systems there; those lectures became Designing Machine Learning Systems (O'Reilly, 2022), an Amazon #1 bestseller in AI that has been translated into more than ten languages. Her follow-up, AI Engineering (O'Reilly, 2025), which her site says has been the most-read book on the O'Reilly platform since its release, is being translated into six further languages. She also writes fiction and creative nonfiction, including four Vietnamese books of stories about people she met around the world, which have sold more than 100,000 copies, and builds small public tools such as GoodAIList, KilledByGPT and lazynlp.
