Chelsea Finn - Stanford Roboticist Who Invented MAML

Chelsea Finn is a Stanford assistant professor who invented MAML and co-founded Physical Intelligence, the robot foundation-model company in San Francisco.

Chelsea Finn (born 1992) is an American computer scientist working on robot learning and meta-learning. She took her bachelor's degree at MIT and her PhD at UC Berkeley in 2018, advised by Pieter Abbeel and Sergey Levine; her dissertation, "Learning to Learn with Gradients", won the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. Her best-known contribution is model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML), an algorithm that lets a network adapt to a new task from little data. At Stanford she is assistant professor of computer science and of electrical engineering and the William George and Ida Mary Hoover Faculty Fellow, and she leads the IRIS lab, Intelligence through Robotic Interaction at Scale, part of the Stanford AI Lab. In 2024 she co-founded Physical Intelligence, a San Francisco company building foundation models for general-purpose robots; it has raised more than $1 billion and released the robot model pi-0.7 in April 2026. Her honours also include the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society's Early Academic Career Award in 2022 and a Presidential Early Career Award.
