Andrej Karpathy: AI researcher and educator

Andrej Karpathy, OpenAI founding member and former Tesla AI director, joined Anthropic's pre-training team in May 2026 and teaches Zero to Hero.

Andrej Karpathy is a Slovak-Canadian AI researcher and educator. He was a founding member of OpenAI in 2015, ran Tesla's Autopilot vision work as Director of AI from 2017 to 2022, returned to OpenAI in 2023 and left in February 2024. He took a 2015 Stanford PhD under Fei-Fei Li and designed CS231n, Stanford's first deep learning course. In July 2024 he founded Eureka Labs, an AI-native education company, and kept teaching in public through the "Neural Networks: Zero to Hero" series and repositories such as nanoGPT and nanochat. He coined "vibe coding" in February 2025. On 19 May 2026 he joined Anthropic's pre-training team under Nick Joseph, to start a team using Claude to accelerate pre-training research. He says he plans to return to education in time.
