Alexei Efros: computer vision professor at Berkeley

Alexei Efros is the Howard Friesen Professor of EECS at UC Berkeley and a BAIR member, known for texture synthesis and data-driven vision and graphics.

Alexei "Alyosha" Efros holds the Howard Friesen Chair in Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley, where he is a core member of the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research lab. He joined Berkeley in 2013 after a decade on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University, and has also been affiliated with Ecole Normale Superieure/INRIA and the University of Oxford. Born in St. Petersburg in 1975, he studied at the University of Utah and took his PhD at Berkeley in 2003 under Jitendra Malik. His research uses data-driven methods across computer vision and computer graphics, especially where large amounts of unlabelled visual data exist. The line runs from "Texture Synthesis by Non-parametric Sampling" (1999) and "Image Quilting" (2001) through image-to-image translation, pix2pix and CycleGAN, to self-supervised visual representation learning; he was still publishing at NeurIPS 2025 and SIGGRAPH 2026 and teaching graduate computer vision at Berkeley in spring 2026. He has three PAMI Helmholtz Test-of-Time Prizes, an NSF CAREER Award in 2006, the 2016 ACM Prize in Computing, and in 2026 the ACM SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award.
