Albert Gu: Mamba co-creator, CMU and Cartesia

Albert Gu is an assistant professor at CMU and co-founder and chief scientist of Cartesia, author of the S4 paper and co-creator of Mamba and Mamba-3.

Albert Gu is co-founder and chief scientist of Cartesia and an assistant professor in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where he leads the Goomba Lab. CMU lists his doctorate as a PhD in machine learning from Stanford University, 2015-2022. In October 2021 he was first author of the S4 paper, "Efficiently Modeling Long Sequences with Structured State Spaces", written with Karan Goel and Christopher Re, which introduced structured state space models as an efficient way to handle long sequences. In December 2023 he and Tri Dao published Mamba, a selective state-space architecture taken up in both research and products, and in March 2026 the same line of work produced Mamba-3, accepted at ICLR 2026. He co-founded Cartesia with Karan Goel, Arjun Desai and Brandon Yang to build real-time models on state-space foundations; the company's products include the Sonic text-to-speech and Ink speech-to-text models. He was named to TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI in September 2024.
