Zed Industries was founded in 2021 by Nathan Sobo, Max Brunsfeld, and Antonio Scandurra, the same team that previously built the Atom text editor and the Electron desktop-app framework (formerly at GitHub). The company builds Zed, a code editor built from scratch in Rust designed for speed and real-time multiplayer collaboration between developers. Zed launched its collaborative code editor alongside a $10 million Series A round in March 2023. The editor has since added AI-powered features, including integrated AI coding assistance and support for AI agents working alongside developers in the editor. In November 2024, Zed Industries raised a $32.4 million Series B led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from returning investors Redpoint Ventures, Root Ventures, V1.VC, and Matchstick Ventures, bringing total funding to about $42 million.
