Z.ai, formerly known internationally as Zhipu AI, is a Chinese artificial intelligence company headquartered in Beijing. It was founded in 2019 as a commercial spin-out of Tsinghua University's Knowledge Engineering Group by professors Tang Jie and Li Juanzi, and rebranded from Zhipu AI to Z.ai in 2025; the company is led by CEO Zhang Peng. Z.ai develops the GLM ("General Language Model") series, spanning the early open ChatGLM dialogue models to the more recent GLM-4.6 and GLM-5 releases used for chat, coding, and agentic tasks, and offers a subscription "GLM Coding Plan" for developers. Backed by roughly $1.5 billion raised from investors including Alibaba, Tencent, Ant Group, and Saudi Arabia's Prosperity7 Ventures, the company completed a Hong Kong IPO in January 2026, becoming, by its own description, the first large-language-model company to go public, at a valuation of about $6.55 billion.
