yoona.ai was founded in Berlin in August 2020 by Anna Franziska Michel, who built the company around a team of garment engineers, machine learning researchers, and developers after working in fashion production and seeing how much design time gets spent redrawing similar variations of a style by hand. The platform takes a sketch, a text description, or an existing design and generates variations — different colorways, silhouette tweaks, pattern mixes — aimed at cutting the time a design team spends on early-stage ideation before a style is locked for development. The company went through Techstars' accelerator program and has worked with German fashion brands including Marc Cain, Gerry Weber, and Esther Perbandt, positioning its tool as useful for both independent designers exploring ideas quickly and larger brands trying to increase the number of style options they can evaluate each season without proportionally increasing design headcount. yoona.ai has raised seed funding from investors including Techstars and CyberAgent Capital, and has more recently pushed further into converting 2D designs into 3D and AR-ready formats with support from EU-backed development funding.
