World Anvil was founded in London in 2017 by writer Janet Forbes and Dimitris Havlidis, who set out to give novelists and tabletop gamemasters a single structured home for characters, timelines, maps, and lore instead of scattered documents. The platform has grown into one of the largest dedicated worldbuilding communities online, with millions of registered users building interconnected wikis for novels and RPG campaigns alike. Beyond wiki-style articles, the toolset includes interactive maps, historical timelines, relationship and diplomacy webs, an RPG campaign manager for tabletop groups, and a built-in novel-writing module. Its AI feature, the Sage, generates history, descriptions, and lore for article stubs using the context already stored in a world's articles rather than starting from a blank prompt.
