Windsurf

Windsurf (formerly Codeium) makes an AI-powered coding IDE; its core team was hired by Google in 2025 and its product/IP acquired by Cognition AI.

Windsurf began as Codeium, a company founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan (CEO) and Douglas Chen (CTO), originally under the name Exafunction focused on GPU-utilization infrastructure before pivoting to AI-powered developer tools in 2022. In November 2024 the company launched the Windsurf Editor, an AI-native IDE, and later rebranded the company itself as Windsurf. It reached a $1.25 billion valuation in an August 2024 Series C led by General Catalyst. In May 2025, OpenAI agreed to acquire Windsurf for approximately $3 billion, but the deal collapsed in July 2025 amid an intellectual-property dispute involving Microsoft. In its place, Google agreed to pay roughly $2.4 billion to hire CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and about 40 employees, and to license Windsurf technology, in a reverse-acquihire; both founders moved to Google DeepMind. Separately, on July 14, 2025, Cognition AI (maker of the AI coding agent Devin) acquired the remaining Windsurf business, including its IP, product, brand, and customer base, absorbing roughly 200 remaining staff. Jeff Wang, previously Windsurf's head of business, became CEO of the Windsurf division under Cognition. In June 2026, the Windsurf IDE was rebranded again as "Devin Desktop" as Cognition merged the two products. The original Codeium/Windsurf entity was headquartered in Mountain View, California; it no longer operates as an independent company.
