WellSaid Labs was founded in Seattle in 2018 by Matt Hocking and Michael Petrochuk, who met at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. The company built its voice models by licensing recordings directly from professional voice actors and compensating them for usage, a deliberate contrast to synthetic-voice competitors trained on scraped audio. WellSaid raised about $2 million in seed funding in 2019 followed by a $10 million Series A in 2021 from investors including Voyager Capital, FUSE, and GoodFriends. Its flagship product, WellSaid Studio, offers more than 120 licensed AI voices across languages and accents, with direct plugins for Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Express, an API for embedding narration into apps and IVR systems, and team workspaces with shared pronunciation libraries. The company markets itself squarely at corporate learning and development, marketing, and media teams that need commercially cleared narration rather than consumer-facing voice cloning.
