Weaviate B.V. was founded on June 28, 2019 in Amsterdam by Bob van Luijt (CEO), Etienne Dilocker (CTO), and Micha Verhagen. It grew out of an earlier open-source project called SeMI Technologies. The company builds Weaviate, an open-source vector database that stores data alongside vector embeddings, enabling semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and other AI-native applications. Weaviate has raised roughly $68 million in total funding, including a $50 million Series B in April 2023, from investors such as Index Ventures, Battery Ventures, NEA, and ING Ventures. The company is headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with additional offices in the US and Australia, and continues to develop both its open-source database and a managed cloud offering used widely for building AI and LLM applications.
