Waymo

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company creating a new way forward in mobility.

Waymo originated as Google’s self-driving car project, which began in 2009. The company became an independent self-driving technology company under Alphabet in 2016. Dmitri Dolgov is identified by Waymo as one of the project’s founders and currently serves as co-CEO. Waymo builds the Waymo Driver, an autonomous-driving system using cameras, lidar, radar, onboard software, and supporting infrastructure. It also operates Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and provides autonomous driving technology for mobility applications. Key milestones include the first fully autonomous public-road ride in 2015, the launch of Waymo’s Early Rider Program in 2017, the commercial launch of Waymo One in Metro Phoenix in 2018, and the opening of fully autonomous rider-only service to the public in 2020. Waymo is currently one of the leading commercial autonomous-vehicle companies. In February 2026, it announced a $16 billion investment round and said it had progressed from research milestones to large-scale operations, expanding its autonomous ride-hailing network and AI-driven Waymo Driver technology.
