Watershed builds enterprise software that helps large companies measure, report, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Founded in San Francisco in 2019 by former Stripe employees Taylor Francis, Avi Itskovich, and Christian Anderson, the company built its carbon accounting engine around a library of more than 500,000 emission factors, including the open-sourced Comprehensive Environmental Data Archive (CEDA) developed with Stanford's Doerr School of Sustainability. The platform ingests data from ERPs, cloud providers, and travel systems through more than 60 pre-built integrations, then calculates Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to audit-ready standards for frameworks such as the GHG Protocol and CSRD. Customers include Airbnb, FedEx, Visa, Spotify, and Dr. Martens, along with several of the largest U.S. banks and private equity firms. Watershed also runs a carbon removal marketplace that lets customers fund projects like direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering. Watershed raised a $100 million Series C round led by Greenoaks in February 2024 at a reported $1.8 billion valuation, bringing total funding well past $180 million from investors including Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. The company employs more than 600 people across offices in San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, and Mexico City.
