Vapi grew out of a pivot: its founders, Jordan Dearsley and Nikhil Gupta, had built Superpowered, a YC-backed meeting notetaker, and only found real traction once developers started asking for the low-latency voice infrastructure Dearsley had built for a side-project AI therapist. The pair relaunched as Vapi in late 2023, betting that voice agents needed their own developer-first tooling rather than another vertical chatbot. The platform gives developers a single API and set of SDKs to wire together speech-to-text, an LLM, and text-to-speech into a phone-ready voice agent, along with telephony, function calling, and call analytics, so teams can build assistants for scheduling, support, and outbound sales without stitching several separate vendors together by hand. Vapi has grown quickly since its 2024 public launch: Amazon's Ring business picked its platform after evaluating more than 40 competitors, and the company crossed a billion processed calls before closing a $50 million Series B led by Peak XV Partners in 2026, with Microsoft's M12, Kleiner Perkins, and Bessemer also participating.
