UiPath was founded in Bucharest in 2005 by Daniel Dines and Marius Tirca, initially selling software development kits before pivoting to robotic process automation in 2013. The company built one of the first mainstream RPA platforms, went public on the NYSE in 2021, and remains headquartered in New York with major engineering hubs still in Romania. Its product line has moved well past screen-scraping bots. Studio is the low-code IDE developers and business analysts use to record and build automations, Orchestrator manages and schedules the robot fleet, and Maestro, launched in 2025, adds an orchestration layer that coordinates UiPath agents, third-party LLM-based agents built on Claude, OpenAI, and Gemini models, robots, and human approval steps inside a single governed process. UiPath serves large enterprises in banking, insurance, healthcare, and the public sector, where audit trails and centralized governance over thousands of bots matter as much as raw automation speed. Daniel Dines returned to the CEO seat in 2024, and the company continues to compete with Automation Anywhere, Microsoft Power Automate, and SS&C Blue Prism for enterprise automation budgets.
