Chinese tech conglomerate whose Hunyuan AI lab develops and open-sources the Hunyuan Video generation model.

Tencent was founded on November 11, 1998 in Shenzhen, China by Ma Huateng (Pony Ma) and four co-founders (Zhang Zhidong, Xu Chenye, Chen Yidan, and Zeng Liqing) as Tencent Computer System Co., Ltd. It grew into one of the world's largest technology and internet conglomerates, with major businesses in social media/messaging (QQ, Weixin/WeChat), video games (including Riot Games and Supercell), cloud computing, fintech, and advertising, and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Tencent's AI research arm develops the "Hunyuan" family of foundation models. In December 2024 it released and open-sourced HunyuanVideo, a 13-billion-parameter text-to-video generation model using a Diffusion Transformer architecture, which at launch was described as the largest open-source video generation model available, with reported performance competitive with or exceeding closed commercial video models such as Runway Gen-3 and Luma 1.6. The model and follow-on variants (including image-to-video) are released under the Tencent Hunyuan Community License, which allows free commercial use below a 100-million monthly active user threshold. As a public company, Tencent is led by Chairman and CEO Ma Huateng, with Martin Lau as President and John Lo as Chief Financial Officer.
